Big food businesses earning over Rs. 20 crores require a central FSSAI license with a number starting with ‘1’.

Eligibility Criteria for FSSAI Registration in India

Eligibility for FSSAI registration mainly depends on your annual turnover, what the business does (manufacture, trade, store, transport, sell), and where it operates.

Basic Registration
- Turnover: Up to ₹12 lakh/year
- Typical: Petty food businesses—small sellers, hawkers, home/kitchen units, temporary stalls
State License
- Turnover: ₹12 lakh to ₹20 crore/year
- Typical: Small–medium manufacturers, storers, distributors, marketers operating within one state
Central License
- Turnover: Above ₹20 crore/year
- Also required if (regardless of turnover): Importing/exporting food, operating across multiple states (Central for Head Office), e-commerce marketplace/aggregator roles, or large/strategic operations (railways, airports, seaports, central govt. premises)

Important Notes on FSSAI License

Multi-state operations: Get a Central License for the Head Office, plus a State/Registration for each unit/warehouse in its state.
Capacity-based rules: Some categories (e.g., dairy, meat, edible oil) have production-capacity thresholds that can require a Central License even below ₹20 crore.
Transporters & caterers: Have special criteria; thresholds may differ—check current FoSCoS guidelines if near a limit.
One premise = One license: Each manufacturing/storage/sale location needs its own license/registration.

Who Should Obtain FSSAI Registration (Food License)?
